Capture Video Recording with Game Bar

This guide will show you how to capture a video recording with Xbox Game Bar, which is only available on Windows 10 machines

Often times a screenshot does not tell the full story but a video recording does! If you have Windows 10 machine, there is a built in recording application called Xbox Game Bar. A recording can help our staff troubleshoot your issue quicker than with just a screenshot.

Caveats

This is not a complete screen recording solution. There are some limitations:

  • You can only record the application which is currently currently active (has "focus"). The app that will be recorded is the active application at the time that you press Windows Key+G.

  • You cannot switch apps or record multiple apps.

  • You cannot record your entire desktop/screen.

  • It is not possible to record Windows File Explorer.

  • Certain older apps may not be compatible with recording.

To Enable Xbox Game Bar

Go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and make sure the slider is turned ON. See screenshot below.

To Use Xbox Game Bar

If you take a look at the screenshot above, you can see there is a shortcut to open the Xbox Game Bar, which is Windows Key+G. You can set whatever shortcut you would like.

So to open, you can use the shortcut (Windows Key+G) or you can search for the application using the search bar in the menu found in the bottom right corner.

Once you open the application, your screen will look something like this:

To Record, simply select the Record button (see screenshot for reference)

Expand for screenshot...

Once you hit record, your screen will look something like the screenshot below. There is a little box that appears in the top right. The blue circle with white square will stop the recording. The microphone icon will turn your microphone on and off.

Expand for screenshot...

After you stop recording, there will be a notification that appears on the right hand side of your screen that looks like this:

The file path is usually C:\Users\<username>\Videos\Captures where <username> is the username you are logged into your machine as. You can select this notification and it will bring you to the folder where your recording is saved!

Then attach the recording when you send in your ticket and that will help our support staff resolve your issue even quicker!
